Sixth Grade Art

6th Grade Art Schedule

In sixth grade, I focus on keeping an art journal and computer animation.

An art journal can be a very personal thing, so I do not ask my child to share their artwork unless they so desire. I require a minimum entry once a week, but make certain they know they can add to it in their free time more often. Also, if a particular prompt is unappealing, they are free to do something else. I use prompts to reduce the stress of deciding what to put on a blank page, but none of them are mandatory. Inspiration is an important part of art.

I also make a point of telling the student that if they are especially pleased with how a piece turned out, they are welcome to scan the artwork and upload the photo to their blog (started in fifth grade composition).

SGKAJ = The Student’s Guide to Keeping an Art Journal

AW = The Animator’s Workbook

AS = Anime Studio 10

Mess = Mess by Keri Smith

We have a variety of doodle books leftover from last year, such as Designer Doodles, The Girls Doodle Book, Beautiful Doodles, as well as adult coloring books (geometric designs, dragons, butterflies, etc). Use what you have, or find free drawing prompts or coloring pages online. Sometimes it’s nice to have a mental break and just color a page. Sometimes kids learn how to blend colored pencils more from a coloring page than from a scheduled exercise.

This is a good year to buy nicer art supplies (i.e. Prismacolor colored pencils, Pentel markers, etc). Kids like feeling more grownup, and they’ve got more maturity/dexterity to handle the supplies correctly. They start to notice the inferiority of Crayola and other kiddie brands. Quality art supplies make great birthday or Christmas presents, so don’t worry about buying everything at back-to-school time and breaking your budget.
